FAQ: Online Measurement for Blown Film Production Lines
This Blown Film line measurement FAQ explains how online measurement systems help control thickness, improve quality, and optimize production in real time.
Does SCANTECH offer a measurement system on the bubble?
No. SCANTECH’s solution measures the BLOWN FILM at the layflat (lay-flat). A powerful algorithm deconvolutes the 2-layers of film into a single profile that is accurately mapped back to the control actuator (air ring or die).
This technique has many advantages, but most importantly, it allows for significantly faster measurements and as such the control response is much faster.
I have limited space in my BLOWN FILM line to mount a regular O-frame scanner, what options do I have?
SCANTECH has a scanner that can be mounted after the collapsing frame where the film passes through the sensor vertically.
Is measuring on the layflat (lay-flat) better than measuring on the bubble? If so, what are the benefits?
Measuring on the layflat (lay-flat, lay flat) provides faster and higher-resolution measurements compared to measuring on the bubble. Traditionally, capacitance gauges were used to measure on the bubble, but this sensor technology offers lower accuracy than X-ray gauges, which measure on the layflat.
The sensor on the layflat can scan the full width of the film (say 1.5m layflat width) in about 20 seconds compared to a couple of minutes to measure the complete profile diameter up on the bubble.
I manufacture a co-extruded blown barrier film. Am I able to measure this?
Measuring the total thickness of the blown barrier film is straightforward. However, it is possible to measure the individual barrier layers such as PA (polyamide/Nylon). Please consult with us as to the type of barrier materials you are producing to see what can be measured.
